Mikie Dread at the controls again. However this time it’s not Mikey Dread, the late great Jamaican deejay, famed for his radio shows over there and his collaborations with the Clash over here. Nor is it the other Mikey Dread, boss man of the legendary Channel One Sound System. It seems the best Dreads come in 3s and here’s a man with a record collection and sound system set-up to die for. He has over 1500 videos on youtube, in which he rinses some of the best reggae tunes out there, spanning 5 decades and encompassing dub, dancehall, lovers and almost any other sub genre you care to mention. Sadly, it seems that he has either turned to pastures new or exhausted his record collection, because his last upload was a year ago. Still, there’s more that enough to keep the average reggae fiend going for a while and here’s one of the best of them, a relatively obscure slice of killer 80s dancehall, brought to a wider audience by Grievous Angel on his Lyric Maker mix. Like all the best tunes from the decade, its bouncing bass line and hypnotic drum track mask a beautifully plaintive vocal melody. Slow it down a bit and smooth out the edges and you’d have a rather slick r’n’b chart-pleaser. Not that you’d want to, mind, as this is sublime.
