Something distinctly American about this debut release from LTDJamz on Iced Age Records, combining as it does two of the US’s greatest exports: house and hip hop. There’s something reminiscent of J Dilla in the way dusty soul, disco and funk samples are manipulated and re-imagined here, none more so on Cut 1 that takes an off-kilter loop and threads it over a heavy 4/4 kick. Just as the groove gets going, we’re thrown a curveball and pulled down into a muddy soul stew before it all starts up again. Cut 2 enters more jubilant disco territory and would be good for a pool party one imagines, although it’s hard to tell as such things don’t exist in the UK. Cut 3 takes a slap bass sample and a jazz funk vibe as its starting point while the 4th track (Cut 4, surprisingly enough) rounds things off with swooning vocals and shimmering keys over a languid thump. A really intriguing release which eschews all the usual house cliches but still remains very danceable. It’s available on Bandcamp from 8th June at a ‘pay what you like’ price. Give generously!
